Sustainable Change Alliance: Protecting Ourselves, Protecting Community, Protecting the World; March 27th 3:00-5:00 pm

We are experiencing an increase in adverse environmental events due to climate change. Santa Barbara is at the end of the Southern California Edison power delivery line. What does that mean to us locally? Impact investing says we can use our capital wisely and make money by using renewable energy and the advancements in generation and storage.

Hear a keynote by CEC’s CEO/Executive Director Sigrid Wright at a Sustainable Change Alliance meeting on how to use impact investing to create a climate-resilient future. James Dehlsen, Chairman of Ecomerit Technologies and Catherine Von Burg, CEO & President of SimpliPhi Power will also share insights from the perspective of their innovative renewable energy companies.

Facing an Uncertain Climate
Since 1980, the number of extreme weather catastrophes worldwide has increased by 350%, and our region is no exception to this upward trend. The current extended drought in Santa Barbara County – recently punctuated by California’s largest ever wildfire and the post-Thomas Fire January 9 debris flow in Montecito – make it clear that the impacts of climate change have arrived to our region, and we are not prepared.

As extreme weather becomes the norm rather than the exception, we will likely see increased impacts to critical infrastructure and top industries such as agricultural production and tourism. Impacts on human health and social services will be most severe on members of our community who are economically disadvantaged and already at risk. How can we use the latest disasters in our region to better connect the dots with climate change and adapt and strengthen our communities to be climate resilient?
