Why are we gathering for this event?

Recent disasters throughout the world have encouraged our industry to engage with immediate practices of resiliency to maximize human safety and structure/community durability and survival.

Similarly, design, construction and operational resiliency strategies can be developed by the green building community to maximize our response options and to minimize the negative impacts and transmission of pandemic diseases.

Since we are all still understanding the breadth of the impacts of the pandemic as it continues to unfold, the time is ripe to hold discussions with others who are focused on sustainability in regards to what they have learned so far and work together to craft and explore viable solutions.

This is the first event in a series that USGBC community chapters in California are crafting to deliver educational outreach addressing how we can conceptualize, design, construct in ways that are more health-protective, adaptable and resilient during a global pandemic. We recognize the pandemic as a learning tool for us to adapt for the better.

This particular event will be run Pecha Kucha style with presenters sharing their experience on the following five topics:
1.     Green Cleaning
2.     Local governance & Advocacy
3.     Transportation
4.     Architecture
5.     HVAC

It will be followed by a breakout room discussion where we will begin brainstorming solutions to issues within certain sectors through sharing stories of experience, resources, and subject matter knowledge.

Be prepared to join the meeting knowing what group topic you prefer to be in once we do the breakout groups. Everyone will receive a summary from each group’s findings at the end of the meeting.

This will be an interactive event that will give you time to catch up with your USGBC colleagues around the state and collaborate on finding innovative and sustainable solutions to some of our collective challenges!

This event will be facilitated by Kyle Pickett. He is Co-founder and Executive Director of The William J. Worthen Foundation, a 501c3 public benefit corporation that conducts research and creates outreach initiatives on the planning, design, construction, performance, and beauty of the built environment. Additionally, Kyle serves as Urban Fabrick Inc’s Co-founder and COO, and is responsible for the consultancy’s West Coast operations. His leadership has established the firm as an influential community partner and reputable for inclusive technical training and successful sustainability projects.

Feel free to share this event with your colleagues and anyone within the building industry or related fields. All are welcome!
